Question,

I am creating a modified task list for our project management that could
send emails to people in our local intranet zone (i.e.
http://monkeypoint) and our Extranet Zone (i.e.
http://sp.highmonkey.com). The issue is that when someone in the
Extranet zone receives a task assignment email, the built-in URL back to
the task uses the intranet URL.

I was wondering if anyone knew any slick ways to modify this based on
the zone they are coming from. I am sure I could do this by developing
a workflow that would conditionally send different URL version, but I
was wondering if I was missing something much simpler.

All e-mails generated by SharePoint use the default zone in the body of
the e-mail.

Our solution has been to resolve the external name internally as well so
that internal users will access via the same URL for instances where
they click a link in the email.

Some user training required here if you want them to modify the URL.

At the time that SharePoint is generating the e-mail, it does not have a
clue how the user normally accesses the site.

In our situation, internal users use http and external https. Still the
same issue.

The problem is that Alternate Access Mappings normally key off the HTTP
context of the request. Things like workflows and alerts don't have a
context since they are spawned by the system. So they always tend to
use the default Zone. I suspect that is what you are seeing rather than
the Intranet zone. The Best Practice is to normally use an FQDN for the
default zone for this reason. The only way I know of to fix it would be
to write a workflow that would pick up a custom field in the list that
specifies which zone address to use.
