Task alerts not working

I have a strange issue with alerts on a workflow (on all workflows
actually) on a MOSS 2007 server SP2. I have googled and tried many of
the suggestions, but none seem to correct my issue. I have the following
scenario.



I have a simple SharePoint approval workflow setup on a document
library. Up until 2 days ago, it was working fine. Suddenly it stopped
working, and as far as I can tell, nothing has changed on the servers.
I have one database server, one wfe and one search server. I have since
come to find out that there are other sites that also utilize a simple
SharePoint approval workflow that have stopped working.



I have checked the workflow task list, all seems to be fine. I have
checked the email settings in CA, no changes there. Stopped and started
the timer service.



Any other suggestions?

There's some STSADM command that flushes the alerts-something-or-other and may
make them behave correctly...

You mean stsadm -o execadmsvcjobs ?

Can you telnet to the mail server from your farm servers? Like "telnet
mail.mycomp.com 25"

Do you have issues with other immediate alerts? Do daily/weekly alerts work?

I am not sure if I could've telnetted, but I did find the problem.
Apparently, some SharePoint updates were made on one of the SharePoint
servers and not the other. As soon as I updated the second server, all
started working.
