Taking over Sharepoint at new company -- where to start

Asked By: Jeet    Date: Dec 26    Category: MOSS    Views: 1098

I have started at a new company and have been appointed to take the reins on the
Sharpoint deployment. I have some expereince with MOSS from my last employer,
but it's been a couple of years and need to refresh the brain. We have WSS3.0
running here and need to know what folks would recommend that i check on the
existing system before I jump into the deep end of the pool. I have Bill
English's book Sharepoint Server 2007. Will this help or confuse the issues with
WSS 3.0.
Our hopes are to migrate up to 2010 when we can.

I would suggest starting from the bottom up. Get yourself acquainted with the
infrastrcuture before jumping into the business side of things. What kind of
database structure, site architecture, quota temples, etc. are in place. Putting
together a quality Visio doc always seemed to help me sort things out.

Once you've got that down, you can start  looking at user demographics. Who are
your top users? What sort of active initiatives are in place? Sit down with
these users and identify current activities, pain points, goals, etc. and that
should paint a decent picture.

Otherwise, there's a fair-sized amount of information available when you
google "SharePoint Admin basics" (no quotes); lots of instructional videos,
MS best practice tutorials, etc.
