I am brand new to SharePoint.

Just want to get started to learn about it as a software developer.

Any system requirement for SharePoint 2010, need to be a Windows Server?

Sorry, I don't think I will learn SP 2010.
Just noticed the hardware requirement  is out of reach.

I may learn SP 2007 instead.
But again, any pointer to learning SP 2007?

No. Not at all. (At least i hope so, given all the marketing).

One built in early half of this decade, and the other built in the
latter half of this decade.

Sorry, don't understand what you are asking. You apparently reject SP
2010 and what to know about what you "should" do

and SharePoint Server 2007 .
