STSADM UpgradeSolution info??

Asked By: Fredrick    Date: Mar 13    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 3377

I've been trying to use the UpgradeSolution command in STSADM and I'm
not too sure what it is supposed to do. Any ideas? According to the
only documentation I can find
(msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa543659.aspx) it only
mentions upgrading features.

If I've made some changes to my Site Definition and webtemp*.xml - is
there any way to "upgrade my solution" which deploys these site defs
so that the old sites would now look the same as a newly created one?
It would be helpful to know the limitations of what can be upgraded
to determine the best maintenance strategy for an implementation.

Upgrade solution  only works for things that were originally installed as
solutions. Did you roll out you site  Definition and webtemp*.xml using
a solution? If so you can deploy the new site def using
upgradesolution. However, there is no way to have the new site def
update existing sites. Think of the site def as the blueprint for
building a site. Once the site is built, changing the blueprint won't
change existing sites. It will only apply to new sites. sites  can be
upgraded by adding new features. But this isn't particularly useful for
incremental updates or changes.

Since posting this originally I've done a lot of investigating. As you
said, you can't change a site  definition once you deploy it which limits
your options for updating a site. You can however, use your solution  to
deploy one or more features  which can be called by the site definition.
When you run upgrade  solution on the solution that deploys the features it
will update the contents of the features that are included in the solution.
