What kind of file  are you wanting to store  and what is the purpose?
Some files are stored on the file system. Are you specifically talking
about podcasts, or some other type of file?

There is a content type called link  to document  that will let you add links in a
document library that represent files stored on an external web site. But other
than that there is no way to store  documents outside SQL and still retain the
full functionality of a SharePoint document library. That was the original
design for SharePoint 2001 and Microsoft discovered very quickly that it was
flawed. Storing files in the filing system  leaves them open to being moved,
copied or deleted outside of SharePoint. That lead to lots of broken links and
missing files in SharePoint 2001.

There were some press releases last year about an external storage API that
would go through SQL, but the binary for the file  would be stored elsewhere in
extended file storage. But I've never seen anymore on this actually being put
into production by anyone. So for right now, unless you want to write your own
custom content type from scratch, you are stuck with putting documents into SQL.

You could go the 3rd party route for a document  archive tool. Couldn't you?

Yes, there are third party tools that will let you archive documents from a
document library. But he seems to want live documents on line as though they
were in a document  library, just not stored where document libraries normally
store documents. That's just not part of the current product, nor am I aware of
any third party solution doing live access today. Archiving doesn't seem to be
what he wants to do.

You could probably simulate a document  library using search scopes,
customized results pages, and indexing of the file  share where the
documents are stored. Not exactly what you want, I know. But it will
let you store  documents on the file system  and surface them in

Historical note for academic interest: SharePoint Portal Server 2001 did not
store its documents in the file  system. It stored them in a thing called the Web
Storage system  (at the time known as WSS), which was actually the Microsoft
Exchange mail store.

I want to store  all the word docs, pdfs in the file  system in place of the
document library. We are thinking of going for this implementation so that we can
reduce dependency on SQL server .
I am not specifically talking about podcasts.
