Stop People Picture Resizing

When I do a People Search the employee photos sometimes display next
to the search result full size (75x100), and sometimes they are
resized to 56x75. It seems completely random when they get resized and
when they do not. How do I force all People Pictures to display full
size (75x100)?

Where are the source photos  stored and is there a consistent format, i.e. .gif
or .jpg?
