Still unclear on defaultlayout.aspx

Asked By: Carlton    Date: Jul 24    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1682

Basically, we made some changes to defaultlayout.aspx..
The changes take their desired effect on the portal home page.
But when navigating to any other site in the portal, the layout is
different.
In essence, I am lead to believe that the various default.aspx pages
from the subsites in the portal take their layout from a different page.
Is this correct? If so, how can I determine which layout page controls
each default.aspx page?

It depends on whether the template you are using to create the subsite
is using publishing or not. Check the URL of the default page  on the
subsite. If the url contains something like .../pages/default.aspx then
you are using a publishing subsite and you can check in site  settings to
see if it is inheriting layouts from the top level site. If it is it
should be using defaultlayout.aspx. If the url is just
.../default.aspx then the site is using a default.aspx file that is
either ghosted from the site definition for the site in the 12 hive or
has been modified using SharePoint Designer. Either way it does not
depend on the defaultlayout.aspx. You would need to edit that page
directly.
