start with SPS 2003

I'm new to Share Point services. how to start with SPS 2003.
I have opened the Central Administrator and tried to create a portal site but
its giving log error.Do i need to configure any thing(server,port,farm etc)
before creating the portal site and just after the installation process is

the process i followed is
in Central Administration window i clicked on SharePoint portal server, in
this selected the Create a portal within virtual server configuration and
entered all the required fields in the next page i'm getting "You have chosen to
create a portal site in a virtual server that is not empty. Any custom
information that you have added to this virtual server since its creation will
become unavailable."

is my process correct?

and where can i get the walkthroughs of this SPS 2003 ,any pdf,e-books etc

You probabaly need to go through Microsoft site and start  reading WSS. There
are plenty of books available for WSS for starters....I would recommend, you
pick up MS press books on WSS and try out things......

You must set up Outgoing SMTP email and you must complete task :
Defining the index schedule. All others are optional in order to get a
Portal site going. This according to page 163 of Beginning Sharepoint
2007 Administration. Put out by WROX. I have to say this book was well
worth its weight in binary digits.
