Are you talking about STS or WSS? WSS will work with either, I don't believe
STS needs/uses SQL.

You need to figure out which one you are talking about. SharePoint Team
Services is a v1 product released circa 2001 and runs on Windows Server 2000.
Windows SharePoint Services is a v2 product which is an add-on to Windows Server
2003. The answer to your question is vastly different depending on which one
you have...

In that case, it is Sharepoint Services (V2) on top of Windows 2003..

You do not need the enterprise  version, though it can be used. WSS will work
with any of the SQL Desktop Engine (included with WSS), SQL Server 200 Standard,
or SQL Server Enterprise. Using the desktop engine will limit your storage and
there is no search. Standard and enterprise editions are the same from WSS's
point of view.
