SPS2003: Checking Out/Checking In Documents

I was wondering if a document can be checked out, saved to the hard drive, make
modifications to the file and then be able to check it back in? I'm using Office
2003 and I thought if I save it to the hard drive, I can be able to check it
back in via the Task Pane, but I don't see this capability.

Also, when checking in, there's no longer a browse button to the modified file.

Does anybody know if this is possible?
