SPS V2: SPOUT and SPIN (Migration from V1 to V2)

I'm getting ready to migrate about 40Gigs worth of documents from SPS 2001 to
SPS 2003. I know MS came out with the SPOUT and SPIN tools to do this migration.
But from what I've heard, don't I have to manually run SPOUT to export the
documents to a file and then manually run SPIN to import the documents into a
document library. What happens to the versions and the metadata?
