SPS V2: Renaming Server Name

Asked By: Leland    Date: Jan 19    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 773

Has anybody tried renaming the computer name on a SharePoint Server that
also has SQL on the same server? Is renaming the server even
recommended?

I did this and now SharePoint is confused because of the location of the
configuration database. It's looking for the server where SQL is
residing. I'm still trying to troubleshoot.

It's going to be confused  about more than that :) It is possible to rename, but
the recommended method is to spsbackup -> rename -> restore

There has to be a lot of places that will need to be changed. I actually
performed it a couple times

1. SQL May not start after renaming  it and you will need to run SQL Setup to fix
2. Farm Setup will need to be reapplied (Assuming you used the server  name for
the configuration database)
3. Application Pool and or local account may need to be changed
4. Portal Name will remain as it was before, so you may need to use a Accessing
mapping

The safest is a to rename server, re-install Sharepoint, create a new
configuration database  and restore the portal
