SPS Search in CMS

Asked By: Brain    Date: Aug 31    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 807

I am exploring the possibility of using the CMS Connector’s search component on our website. Does anyone know if the CMS connector talks to the Index server or the Search server? We have our website hosted in a datacenter and I presume that a second Index or Search server up there would be optimal for this to work efficiently.

The MCMS Connector for SharePoint uses the Query Service Web service that is found on the SharePoint WFE server. So it will act the exact same was as if you ran the search  from your portal. IOW: it falls under the same index  file propogation guidelines as OOTB portal search works.

My new Advanced MCMS book that is due to hit the shelves in the next 2 months (http://www.packtpub.com/more_mcms/book) has a chapter about using the MCMS Connector as well as rolling your own solution as the Connector isn’t very customizeable (you can’t modify the search results or have much control over some other things).

Once you implement what the Connector gives you, you'll see right
away that you need to roll your own as it's just so limiting.

Sorry for hawking the book (to the whole list). Shouldn't have done that... I
was only pointing it out as a place for a future detailed resource on this
topic. If someone took that as me trying to promote it, my bad... not my

You can also check out Stephen Huen's search  components he's done on CodeProject
where he rolled his own. They are quite impressive.

I, for one, am looking forward to getting a copy of your Advanced MCMS
book. I anticipate it will be an invaluable resource.

if you are going to use the connector  only for search
purpose, perhaps you can have a look at the following

You will have the source code too so you can customize
it as per your needs. It is much more flexible and
less troublesome than the connector.

It was due at the end of this month, but we’re making some last minute changes… almost in the hands of the editors. Lots of SharePoint related stuff for MCMS folk.
