Will SPS run on a dual PII system?

Asked By: Christopher    Date: Mar 02    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 673

We're a small organization considering SPS. We currently have only
one server running Small Business Server 2000. Before we invest in a
second server, I'd like to evaluate SPS. However, the only spare
machine that we have is a Pentium 2 with dual 350Mhz processors, 1gb
RAM, and 18gb SCSI hard drive. Will SPS absolutely refuse to run on
this server, or will this suffice as an evaluation box?

I ran a development box on a 166 with 512 for a long time. It was slow but
perfect for my needs. Additionally, at this point, if you want to evaluate
SPS, might I suggest evaluating the SPS 2.0 beta. With 2.0 coming out by
the end of the year, no real need to buy 1.0.

Glad to hear I can evaluate this without
investing in a new server.

You suggest evaluating SPS 2.0 beta. Doesn't this require Windows
2003?

Are portals developed using 1.0 going to be upgradeable to 2.0?

SPS Version 2003 requires Windows Server 2003. You can download the beta
from the Microsoft SharePoint site (www.microsoft.com/sharePoint) and
evaluate it.

I would not admit this to my friends but I have installed on a single
400 with 512mb ram and 9gig and I have also installed on a 450 with 256
and 4 gig. They worked for playing around with, but I would be hesitant
to let a potential end user see it too much. They might not understand
that the system  is slow because of hardware and that will make it harder
for you to get the rest to start working on a real system if you go with
one.
Ofcourse it appears that John wins for the slowest machine with his 133
setup.

For evaluation purposes (or even development) that's fine. I have a
makeshift development system  on a PII450 single processor right now and
it's fine for creating web parts and testing components. For an
evaluation of performance you would probably need to setup something
with the recommended configuration (as per the MS specs) but if you're
just kicking the tires and seeing if the products works as advertised,
your setup should be fine.

I filled out the form and am waiting for my link to download
Windows 2003.

Just to clarify that I was speaking of SPS v1 on a Win2000 Server. I have not
loaded SPSv2 beta on Win2003 Server on a low end box.
