SPS & Office Best Practices: Send for Review

It is typical for a group of users to participate in an author
initiated collaboration on a document. The author sends the
document as an e-mail attachment to the group.

As each response returns with an attached document (with or without
changes)the author must consolidate the changes back to the original.

We thought this process might be streamlined with SPS, and it can be
with pre-loaded approval routes. However, most of our collaboration
is real-time and the group will not use Office Discussions. So we
are attempting to use the Send for Review within the Office

Has anyone had good experiences with Send for Review? First it
prompts to include the document as an attachment and it sends a link
which when clicked prompts the user to open... or save. Of course,
the group's preference is click and be prompted to check out for
editing in the native office app. Can the Send for Review e-mail
specify something other than the http:// link to the document?
Alternatively, if the author sends the SPS document as an
attachment, will she easily be able to role up the changes into the
