SPS Deployment

Asked By: Prince    Date: Jul 29    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 842

I would like to deply SPS with a separate SQL
Database. How could I possibly do this? Is there any
article available regarding this?

I will be using 1 server with Win2003 platform for my
Sharepoint Server and a separate Database server SQL
2005.

i highly reccomend the small farm setup referenced in the sharepoint resource
kit :) as a baseline.

the only difference i know of right now is that you need to assign administrator
rights to the account that runs as the sharepoint service account (on each front
end only).

the other thing is that Portal 2003 is not yet functioning with sql server  2005
(oct CTP) in my environment... err WSS sp2 does but portal search tosses out a
lot of warnings/errors, something about "unknown command".

Is there any way I could monitor user access to site?
I tried to check it in
Site Usage Report but I find its reported information
late.

I would like to check if there are users currently
accessing the site (at
present).

I tried to access our newly created portal in a
remote/client machine but I get this error:

You are not authorized to view this page

You do not have permission to view this directory or
page using the credentials that you supplied because
your Web browser is sending a WWW-Authenticate header
field that the Web server  is not configured to accept.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please try the following:

Contact the Web site administrator if you believe you
should be able to view this directory or page.
Click the Refresh button to try again with different
credentials.
HTTP Error 401.2 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due
to server configuration.
Internet Information Services (IIS)

I tried changing IIS to anonymous access yet still not
working. What should I do>?
Thank you very much in advance.

Are you behind a proxy server  or firewall that prevents the use of
Integrated Windows security?

I wanted to give an update. Problem is still not fixed but this is
what I think is happening after spending several hours going over
every SharePoint setting with another person who works with
SharePoint quite a bit.

Here is what happened on my laptop. Last week during testing while
wired into the internal network I was able to hit the server  using
https://synapps1/. While internal I could not hit the site using
https://sharepoint.synergyonefcu.org/. I took my laptop
disconnected the network connection and used the wireless connection
on a separate  network from ours. I was able to get in using
https://sharepoint.synergyonefcu.org/. This week on the same laptop
I am not able to externally.

The person who did the original install of the SharePoint server
says that there have been users who have never been able to hit the
site, while others have. So why could some attach while others
could not. My guess is cached credentials being stored on the
machines that are working. I feel that the IIS server when it makes
the request back to the Active Directory server that i is not
getting a response because the firewall is not allowing the
authentication ports thru.

To test this Ethereal was set up last night and we will be doing
some testing today. More to follow ...............

Several things that you mention point to dns resolution issues.
Questions:
Can the clients resolve the name to an IP address?
Does the IIS virtual server  have all of the possible entries listed as host
headers? It would need both synapps1 and sharepoint.synergyonefcu.org as host
header entries.
Are they listed as alternative URLs in sharepoint?

Clients also cached negative dns query results. An IPCONFIG /flushdns should
clear that up.

Certainly NTLM authentication will not survive transiting the firewall. Turning
on anonymous authentication at IIS simply means that IIS will not even request
authentication, but passes client request to sharepoint as anonymous. Sharepoint
will NOT return a request for "real" crendentials back to IIS.
