SPS Alerts work but WSS Alerts don't

Asked By: Evelyn    Date: Dec 17    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 2183

I have SPS2003 installed on one server in a domain, with Exchange
2003 on another server - same domain. I can sign up for and receive
alerts in area lists in SPS - no problems with alerts in the portal,
but in WSS sites under the portal I only receive the notification
that I have signed up for an alert, not the actual alerts thereafter.

I can see the alert entries entering the EventCache table of the
Content DB in SQL Server, and after a few minutes they disappear - as
if being processed, but obviously they don't turn up in the user
Inbox. I tried all the stuff with Relaying on the Exchange virtual
SMTP server etc (and also on the SMTP Internet connector too, just in
case) - still no joy. Incidentally I'm only (at the moment) trying to
send emails to internal (made-up) addresses defined within the
recipient policies of Exchange and I can do a full SMTPDiag between
the SP 'From' address to the recipient(s), and obviously the Portal
alerts are working fine so the SMTP server 'seems' to be working
but...

So I setup and started examining the SMTP(Default Virtual Server) log
and it would appear that WSS is starting a connection for each alert
to the SMTP server but seems to get stuck where the DATA part would
happen, and then after 10 mins (default connection timeout) Exchange
gives up and quits the connection losing the alert email.

Here is a snippet of the log:

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. I've got this horrible
feeling it's something simple...
