SPS 2003 and pdf ifilter

Asked By: Jasen    Date: Apr 24    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1103

What has everyone's experience been with the pdf ifilter on SPS 2003. It
seems that this ifilter is pretty flaky and I am constantly getting
reports of the pdf searches not working. Can someone confirm that the
pdf ifilter does NOT have to be installed on the SQL server. We have a
medium server farm with two WFE, one index server and a clustered SQL
2000 server.

Has anyone had any luck in reinstalling the pdf ifilter and turning off
full-text search in Central Administration and then turning it back on.
Are there any other work around for having to re-add the pdfs files
after the pdf ifilter is reinstalled. I think that is ridiculous. I
definitely cannot do that.

If anyone has any other tips please let me know.

I think you are confusing several things, which is probably the source
of your issues/confusion.

1) SPS search does not use Full Text search, but WSS search does

2) WSS Search requires the iFilter be installed on the SQl Server

3) SPS search results are used everywhere but the "This site"
scope, which uses WSS Search

4) SPS search requires a search crawl be run, and in the case of
iFilters that the files be created _after_ the iFilter is installed and
configured (or a new clean full index be run)

5) WSS search uses SQL Full Text search, and again items will need
to have been created after the iFilter is installed and configured, or
the Full Text index must be purged and rebuilt

I will try recreating/rebuilding both
indexes for wss and sps
