SPS 2003 - Inherit Parent's Template

Asked By: Salvador Newman         Date: Aug 18, 2004      Category: Sharepoint      Views: 1549

We started noticing a problem yesterday and we're not sure if it is
a bug, or if we just had erroneous expectations. Please help us
figure this out: When creating an SPS subarea, we select the
template option "Inherit Parent's Template". Our expectation was
that this would, in effect, create a copy of the parent page which
can then be modified. We wanted to use this to carry instances of
certain webparts on every page of a community, for instance a
standard links listing. What's happening is that each subarea
created with this "Inherit" option is a mirror image of its parent -
they are connected, the inheritance cannot be broken. Any changes
made to one is made to all. A change made on a third-level subarea
is seen on the homepage, and the reverse.

This is the expected behavior.

In order to achieve what your looking for, You need to create a new template  which can be pretty complex.

I was expecting it to create a copy of the parent but it did what you described. I was expecting it to create a local copy (instance) of all the objects that exist on the parent page.

I “think” the intended use of this feature - inherit  template, is to build a page with context sensitive contents.
