SPS 2003: Crashing errors when launching Office 2007.

I am encountering an error when trying to launch any Office software
files from within SPS 2003 Portal and WSS 2.0 on my new MS Office 2007
installation. Whenever I am browsing through a document library for
example and I am trying to launch a PowerPoint presentation or MS Word
document, or click on "New Document" that launches a new Word document,
IE simply just crashes and when I click on "view error details" it blabs
something about appcompat.dll.

My problem is I am not sure if its...

A) An MS Office 2007 issue --- MS Office will not launch the request
from SPS 2003 (like New Document in a doc library).

B) An Internet Explorer error --- IE isn't rendering the request through
to my MS Office 2007 programs.

C) SPS 2003 Portal/WSS incompatibility --- SPS 2003 Portal/WSS 2.0 is
not able to launch files in MS Office 2007 programs, only Office 2003.

Does anyone else have this issue happening to them? If so, did you
isolate the problem and how did you fix it?

Try the following:

1. Go to “C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12”
2. Delete “OWSSUPP.DLL”
3. “Start” -> “All Programs” -> “Microsoft Office” -> “Microsoft Office
Tools” -> “Microsoft Office Diagnostics”
I got the same issue with IE7, Office2007 and SPS2003. The above is found on
the web and resolves my issue.

As a follow up, I wouldn't necessarily delete the OWSSUPP.dll, rather rename
it to something like owssupp.old_dll. I've found a couple of instances
where the user didn't have Microsoft Office Diagnostics installed :)

As for the cause, lovely Office 2003 Service Pack 2 updates pushed to
machines that are already on Office 2007.
