How to speed up import using SPIN with SPS 2003

I am in the process of moving documents from SPS 2001 to SPS 2003 using
SPOUT/SPIN. I noticed that with full-text seach enabled in SPS 2003 the import
process is very slow. Is it possible to turn off full-text search in order to
import the documents then turn search back on? Or is there any other setting in
SPS 2003, SQL Server, or server Services that can be altered to disable indexing
of files without causing problems in SharePoint?
