Special List columns

When creating a new list, three columns are usually pre-defined:

Title(linked to item with edit menu)
Edit(link to edit item)
Type(icon linked to document)

1. What is the purpose of each of these columns.
2. When each of these columns should be used.

3)Type is showing that particular file is what type of file .example
word,pdf,ppt file like this.
2) edit  link item  is you can edit particular item with using of right click
of mouse.
1) same as second one.
