SPD & CustomEdit Forms (again)

Am not sure if I love or hate SPD.

Have a custom edit form (MOSS), not sure if it was built with text editor, SPD,
or VSxx. It is a take off on a DFWP w a filter and paging to get to next item.
Works fine. We can copy it to a new site within our site collection, works fine.

With SPD I make a copy, make sure it runs, then change the filter w the
properties pane of the DFWP, save it, and it is BROKEN. Go back and change the
filter to original state, still is broken. Nothing I can do will make this page
render again.

Instead, I make a copy of original, then with SPD and "text editing" (CTRL+H), I
replace all Neq with Eq, thereby changing the filter, save it, and it displays
FINE.

Things like this have been BUGGING me for months.

Anybody know what REALLY is going on, and how to reliably edit aspx pages?
