SPD 2007 Unable to Connect to SQL database

Asked By: Jesse    Date: Nov 08    Category: MOSS    Views: 2437

Using MOSS 2007 & Sharepoint Designer 2007.
Creating a new page with a dataview and data connection to a sql server. (this
is part of an existing site)
I attempt to make a connection - entering in
ServerName: \\SQLServerName
Provider Name: Microsoft .Net Framework Data Provider for SQL Server OR
Provider Name: Microsoft .Net Framework Data Provider for OLE DB
User Name & Password: SQL Login Name

The error I get is:
Server Error: An error occurred while retrieving the list of Databases from
\\SQLServerName: The data retrieval service encountered an error during
connection to the data source.

Is your SQL server setup to use Mixed Mode authentication? If not, then the
only way to do a datasource to an SQL server from SharePoint Designer is to
use SSO. SharePoint 2007 doesn't support Windows Authentication connections
to an SQL server unless using WSS 3.0 with the SQL instance located on the
same server as WSS. The only real workaround is to use either Microsoft
Single Sign on (SSO) or a set of non-windows SQL credentials.

I've switched the SQL server to accept windows and SQL login. The login that
is sent over is a SQL login.

Any other ideas?

OK, Are you using a named instance of SQL? If so then you need the
servername\instancename in your connection string settings.
