SP2010 on Win7 install....

Asked By: Gregory    Date: Jan 08    Category: Sharepoint 2010    Views: 1143

Has anyone had success with installing the MSDN SP2010 under Windows7? I've got
a Sun VirtualBox 64x Win7 VM running. I'm trying to get SP installed but it
fails on the wizard. Says it can't connect to db. Yes. I have patch KB976462
installed. About ready to give up....any help would be great.

I have an install  of the MSDN SP2010 running  on VMWare 7.0.1 in a two image
install. The host is Win 7 x64. The guests are Windows Server 2008 r2. If
you are trying to do a single server install on a DC using regular SQL
server then you need to do some manual editing of some of the XML files.
Just like the RD an install on a DC will default to a standalone install.
If you are trying to do a developer install on a Win7 box running as a guest
VM you'll need to wait for some updated instructions. The Win7 x64 install
instructions for a developer install on Beta 2 have changed some over time
and haven't been updated since last fall.

sounds like I'll have to wait. Yes, I'm trying to do an all-in-one
developer's install. The idea was to put VS2010 on as well. Thanks, Paul.

It does beg the question while I wait for some fixes to come out on the Win7
install, what is everyone else using for their development environment? Seems to
me working in VMs is the way to go. But, are you doing everything in (1) VM or
do you have multiple? Should I just run Server 2008 R2 instead of a Win7?

Personally I'm running  2 VMs, one small DC with SQL and one large image with
SharePoint and VS etc. The updated instructions should be available soon.

I assume your SP VM is running  server 2008?

I've had zero issues with installing  SP2010 as either a standalone or farm as
long as I'm using server 2008. Slick. Moving to production next....
