SP2010 search issue

I'm having a problem getting search working on our SP2010 environment. This is
a single-server environment running on top of Windows Server 2008 R2. Site
search works fine but when I try an all sites search, I get the error "The
search request was unable to connect to the search service".

The search service application is running as a member of the local administrator
group. The crawl seems to be running as there are several thousand items in the
index. Any idea what I'm missing here?
