SP2010 as an intranet CMS solution

I'm on the hook to redesign my company intranet website this year and the topic
of using sharepoint 2010 came up.

During a brief review of SP '07 (our prior version), it didn't look promising
and a lot of the open source CMS's (DNN for instance) appeared to offer most of
the same features and were more customizable with better skinning. This was a
major factor at the time b/c I read SP '07 wasn't very open to style changes.

One of the major pros to SP is its integration with Office. We use Office and
it would be nice to use active directory for authentication and integrate with
with office documents.

While I'm not against using SP, I don't want to use something just because we
own it. That's a common problem within my organization and while I normally
don't have the final say in software matters it's different this time.

I'd like to hear from others on the list that had a similar experience. What
did you compare SP to, how was the learning curve, did it meet most or all of
your needs? How was the design or skinning of SP? Stuff like that.

Our intranet will be fairly standard with some social networking aspects (blog,
classifieds, etc) and content management abilities. Nothing out of the
ordinary.

I will simply say this:

if (yourShop == "Microsoft shop" && yourDistanceToRetirement > 0)
{
GetOnBoard();
}
else
{
GetLeftBehind();
}

That was on the spot. I'm sure it could use some refactoring.
