SP2007 Default themes Location

I would like to be able to make some minor customizations to the
default theme. However, I don't find a folder for it under Program
Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server
extensions\12\TEMPLATE\THEMES

My question is-

Where can I find it to make modifications?. If not, how are default
styles/theme applied?
