SP development

Asked By: Wendy    Date: Mar 04    Category: Sharepoint 2010    Views: 746

New to SharePoint and we're starting out with 2010. I have just upgraded my
Visual Studio to 2010 and I want to be able to do SP development in this
environment.

Do I need to have a full version of the SP server loaded on my box or is
there a dev version with a smaller footprint for x86 boxes? What else to I
need?

Just like sharepoint  3.0 which provides WSS 3.0 and MOSS 2007 for different
hosting purpose. The sharepoint 2010 provides two products:

Sharepont foundation 2010 and sharepoint server 2010. The sharepoint
foundation is the same as WSS 3.0 which is a infrastructure platform and
sharepoint server 2010 is built upon it. Most of the sharepoint basic
features like document/list management, workflow, webpart ... are included
in the fundamental platform and if you just want to start playing the dev
features of VS 2010 and sharepoint 2010, you can install the sharepoint
foundation first(it is lightweight and free). Sharepoint server 2010 adds
more enterprise business specific functionalities and features.
