Sorting the field being grouped on

Asked By: Rachelle    Date: Sep 05    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 4209

In a DataView, I am grouping a list of Knowledge Base topics into
Hardware/Software/etc, by a "Grouping" column I added to the list that
holds it. The only options with grouping in SPD are
ascending/descending, although there is the ability to edit the sort
expression. Does anyone know if there is a way to do this so I can
sort the grouping field other than alphabetically (maybe a sort field
, although how do I have a field for a grouping field?)?

Example (grouping > items):
Software > Categories
Hardware > Categories
Other > Categories

I want it to group in that order, but it will do Hardware, Other,
Software alphabetically.

You will also find some limitations using a custom sort  expression
e.g. (from memory) it has to be the first sort/group field.

The easiest answer I have found is to rename the options  "1 -
Software", "2 - Hardware", "3 - Other".

Couldn't you add a sorting  column that auto-populates based on what
genre (hardware, software, other) is chosen? Force 1 for software, 2
for hardware  and 3 for other. The you could use that for sorting even
though it is not displayed.
