Slow when opening MS Project files

Asked By: Naman    Date: Mar 18    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 3495

I've got a few MS Project files in my document library and find that
it takes ages for them to open in MS Project when I click on them. It
doesn't take long to open project files when they are stored on a
local drive (they open instantly). However i find that it's very quick
to download the files off sharepoint and save them on my machine.

This behaviour is limited to project files. i've tested word docs and
excel spreadsheets but not experienced this issue. I feel its
something to do with project but i'm not 100% sure as yet.

Have any of you noticed this? Is there anyway to make the files open
faster?

We're running Project Server, and our Project files  seem to download  and
upload just fine. I'm not suggesting that you run out and buy Project
Server, but as Project Server uses WSS, I'm wondering what the difference
is.

Are the same files slow  to upload? Have you checked the file sizes? If your
Project files are significantly larger, this might be the cause. Having said
that, Excel and PowerPoint seem to be the worst offenders, at least on my
system.

The only thing that I can think of at this point is to check your file
associations (client) and your document  library settings (server) for a
clue. Any error messages in the server logs? Client logs?
