Size Limit for Workflow in Designer

Asked By: Kaci    Date: Apr 20    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 2580

I am working on a Workflow in SharePoint Designer. Due to the lack of
nested if conditions, I am forced to write if conditions individually,
because of which a particular step in the workflow has grown to 120 if
conditions. When I click on the Finish button, it gives some kind of errors.
Unfortunately, our client doesn't provide access to the server. So I am
unable to trouble shoot. Can anyone help me with this? Though the file gets
saved, the work flow doesn't run. I am attaching the error screen shots. Is
there any limit for workflow size? On searching for this error in Google, I
found some suggestions for changing some erroneous web.config entries which
might be present. But I don't have access to the server. So I can't do
anything.

Also, please let me know how to implement multiple WHERE conditions in
SharePoint Designer workflows? Also, how to do string operations like
Substring, Replace in SharePoint Designer workflows?

With SharePoint Designer, it's entirely possible that you just have an error
in the workflow  design (rather than some theoretical limit  that may or may
not exist).

The attachment didn't make it through; can you send the text, or post the
screenshot on the web somewhere?

A bigger question might be Why aren't you doing this workflow  in Visual Studio?

I'm guessing because of this:

> Unfortunately, our client doesn't provide access to the server.

...which doesn't paint a pretty picture.

So they won't allow them to create a feature and deploy it for them? I hope they
don't need this workflow  duplicated on any other library.

Hey, I'm just guessing based on the OP's exposition... and like I said, it
wouldn't be pretty.

common and frustrating for government contractors.

That was a response to Daniel explaining my assessment of the situation.

Let us know if/when you get that screenshot posted somewhere, or feel free
to type the text of the error and send it here.

The client doesn't want us to do custom coding. They want to stick on with
Designer.

I am not able to attach the error screen shots. Please let me know how can I
send them across?

Create an account on http://www.Flickr.com if you don't have anywhere else
to post an image. Then you can reference the URL for the image in a message
here.

Please let me know if you have any problems in accessing these error screen
shots.

Have you tried having the client recycle the app pool for the web
application? I've seen the error about "Server could not complete your
request..." before in SPD and its normally fixed by recycling the app pool.

On the other hand, I've got to say that I'm with Daniel on this one. This
sounds like a workflow  that is far too complex to be successfully built or
maintained in SPD.

Its a big client and even this kind of a small thing needs to go through a
big process and thats why I had to rule out these kind of options.

Three questions:

Did you move this workflow  from somewhere else?

Have you successfully built a workflow on this server before and/or since?

Does the ISP have an answer to this issue?
