Is there any functionality lost when creating a sub-site within a site?
Is there a limit to nesting sites?

sub-site  is functionally the same as any other site created with the same
template. The only functionality  difference is that WSS search only functions
within a single site, so if you create a subsite instead of an additional list
or library, that content cannot be searched from the parent site without an
add-in (either SPS or a 3rd party).

There is no limit  to nesting  beyond the documented limits of the total number of
sites in a site collection, and any URL length issues you might encounter.

Let me make sure I understand this: The parent site search will not
return results from the child site? This is what I've been experiencing
but wasn't sure it was by design.
