My Sites: Separate web app vs. just separate site collection

Asked By: Dontae    Date: Nov 12    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1525

We're running our collaboration portal as one web application set up
with SSL. Within it we have about a dozen site collections each with
their own Database.

I now want to set up My Sites. The best practices seem to indicate
that it's best that it be it's own web application. Alas, in doing
that, we need to deal with dual-SSL sites on the same farm and
handling it via IP addresses or Host headers.

Not a huge deal, but then I stumbled upon this article:

www.chandima.net/.../setup-sharepoint-my-sites-via-ma\
naged-path-in-own-content-db.aspx

Where they set up MySites as part of the main web application, and
ensure that it's in its own Database.

So, given that, what's the pros/cons between My sites being in their
own web app + own database vs. own site collection + own database?
