Sites migration between two portals...

Asked By: Katie    Date: Jul 16    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 808

I wanted to migrate a team site from a portal to different portal on
the same server. This team site has custom webparts. Please share your
thoughts on this process.

If the site  is small enough, you can save it as a template and move the site that way (save as a template, save the STP file locally, go to new location, upload STP file and then create site) or if the site it too large, you can use the SMIGRATE tool. Here is some more info: weblogs.asp.net/bsimser/articles/spsmigration.aspx

For the template save, the easiest way to check to see if it is too large is to try to save it as a template. If it is over 10MB in size, it will throw a friendly error message.

As for the custom  web parts, I am not sure if you mean customized out of the box web parts or home grown custom coded web parts. For any custom code web parts you may have to install those for the new site, or depending on how your server  is setup or the web part is set up, it may be unnecessary since you are not changing servers.
