My Site ...should or should not...?

Asked By: Pankaj    Date: Oct 04    Category: MOSS    Views: 792

Can anyone please suggest me a link which can give me the advantages and
disadvantages of My Site please......?

What will we get if we implement this feature, and what will we loose if
we don't....

Am I right with my feeling that we should not as what the users will do
with their own page and it wud just put extra load on server.....??

Also is it true that some feature of MySIte is Prerequisite of 'People
Search'......? If yes...what are those...?

My Sites are MOSS only but are in effect the Web-based replacement for
My Documents. I highly recommend implementing them if you have the
wherewithal. Sorry, I don't have any links.

I'm not a MOSS guy so I don't know the answer to your specific question.
But, I suspect that "People Search" is based on MOSS profiles which can
be maintained by people on their My Site. So, in the interest of
self-managed content, My Sites provide a means by which people can
maintain current information about themselves. Also, once someone is
found, I suspect that the destination link  provided by in the search
results is the person's My Site.

My site  is like having your own website and able to do everything that you do
day to day from just one single interface.

You can have your My douuments ( no need to switch to desktop my documents)
You can have you mail box intergrated to your MY SIte ( no need to switch to
You can have you Contacts integrated to Your MY Site ( no need to switch to
You can have your Calendar integrated to Your mysite  ( - do - )
You can have your Quick links to different sites different apps ( no need to
swtich to desktop)
You can add a lot more web parts to the same mysite page  which will allow you
to do all your day to day work) from the same single page.

Draw backs:

People may over use the the amount of space and number of documents etc..
may be able to add all the pictures on this earth to their own site again may
have impact on searching / indexing performace.

Basically it is like that have their own sharepoint site with kind of admin

So i guess when you are allowing users  to have My site, lot of dudeligence need
to be done in the aspect of what kind of things that user can do and can not do
by applying some policies and rights and may be site quotas etc.

Apply site  quotas to control storage space Yes. But don't look for ways to
control what a user puts there through the software. Treat it just like hanging
pictures etc on the cube walls at work. Have a written company HR policy about
what is appropriate to store. SharePoint is about empowering people to do
things with the software. People should control their own use of mySite, not the
