More site permissions vs. site group quesitons...

Question 1:

We have a site collection set up. This collection has groups:

siteCollection Members
siteCollection Owners
siteCollection Visitors

If I add a user to the siteCollection Owners group, they don't get
access to the top level siteCollection site. Any ideas why? This is all
Active Directory authentication.

If I go to site collection >> SITE PERMISSIONS and siteCollection Owners
is listed there with 'full control'.

Question 2:

When looking at the groups or people in the site settings, if that
person has uploaded an image to their mysite profile, I get a network
log in prompt for each individual image that tries to load.

My guess it's because MySites exists under a separate web application
running under a separate SSP? We have an intranet and extranet apps,
with the mysites existing on the extranet apps. Is there a way to
prevent this login prompt for each image from happening?
