One Site Collection or Several

We have an Engineering Department that includes several disciplines
(Electrical, Mechanical, etc). Should I create one Department level
site (as a site collection) with subsites for each discipline OR
create top level site collections for each discipline?

I just did not understand what you
meant nor did I realize how much overlap there is between the 2
groups and I'm hoping to get additional opions to add to my

My answer to your question is; it depends. How large will your one site
collection get? Do you want one page where everyone in your department
goes to then get to their discipline site  or is each discipline more or
less standalone? Do you have a portal Area that you can use as the
landing page instead of one departmental top-level site or does every
discipline need their own top-level site? Does each discipline have its
own need for a separate Web Part, List Template, Site Template galleries
or should they all share one set of galleries at the department  level?
Does each discipline need their own set of cross-site groups or should
these also be shared across the department?

Since each site collection  can go into its own content database, you'll
want to weigh the potential need to scale out discipline-based site
collections to different database servers over time vs. ease of backup
for a single database solution. Pros and cons and tradeoffs are so
prevalent that Microsoft themselves had an internal debate about whether
people would use Subwebs or top-level Webs. So much so that WSS v2
didn't have show the Subwebs in the left nav because some thought that
it would be too much of a drain on the loading of that page and others
thought that it would be totally unnecessary.

Anyway, as you can see, this can be a very subjective decision.

My advice was all based on WSS as I don’t use SPS. SPS provides other scaling methods like areas and portals that change things.
