Site Collection Mirror

Asked By: Aida    Date: Oct 22    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1107

I have a business unit who asked me to copy all content from a site (Site A)
open to All Authenticated Users to a permissioned site (Site B). I can't
save SIte A as a template because it is too large. Both sites are in the
same farm using the same content database. Is there a good way to mirror the
content from Site A to Site B? I looked into creating a content deployment
path, but I'm not sure if that is the best option.

If the sites  are in different site  collections, Site B doesn't exist yet, and
its a one time request then you could use content  deployment to do it. You
could also use stsadm Export/Import, but that has the same constraints. You
could also do it with custom programming or several 3rd party tools. These
would have the advantage of being able to support ongoing replication of new
content to Site B. Content Deployment can also do that, but only if the
destination is a Read Only site that only receives changes from Site A.

This would actually be a weekly thing. I am not convinced it is necessary,
but ...

I thought of writing a batch file that would restore site  B using the backup
DAT file of Site A, but then the permissions from Site A would be present.

The destination site would be read-only.

As long as the destination site  is read-only and in a different site collection
I would use content  Deployment since it can be automatically scheduled. You
won't be able to use STSADM Backup/Restore because that preserves the GUIDs for
objects in the backup and can't be restored to the same content database, which
usually means anywhere in the Web Application. You could use STSADM
Export/Import but Content Deployment will do essentially the same thing and can
be scheduled. Content Deployment can also be setup to preserve the permissions.
