What is Single Sign-On? Any detail info about this?

How does it works? e.g. if u r having SPP and some ERP and local apps, can a single user name and password can be used for accessing all the apps? And how the SPP interface integrates with these other apps?? Specially SAP or Oracle Financials?

Simply stated, Single Sign on is a credential cache. If you authenticate
to SharePoint and subsequently authenticate to another application;
SharePoint will store the additional sets of credentials for you so that
in the future you need only authenticate to SharePoint. As I understand
it, the credentials for each application will be recalled as needed on
your behalf and you will login seamlessly. It does take quite a bit of
development effort to implement.
