Silverlight 3.0 and SharePoint 2010

Asked By: Edward    Date: Dec 14    Category: Sharepoint 2010    Views: 1121

Does silverlight automatically get installed with SP2010 or do we need to
install it seperately?
I noticed when creating a new site, the UI was the same as the 2007 UI (with
different colors) and not the new silverlight UI.
I saw a link at the top of the page directing me to download silverlight 3.0.
I thought that it would come with the SP install.
Has anyone run into this?
Does silverlight need to be installed on the server?, on the workstation?
anyone? anyone? bueller?

Silverlight is a web application, like flash, java, etc. so it does need to be
installed on the workstations and servers to work

IIS needs to be configured to use Silverlight:

I believe the SharePoint Client Silverlight runtime aka SDK? (for code/web
parts) is installed on your SP2010 servers (if you want to see the nice UI on
your SharePoint servers, you'll still have to install the Silverlight Client on
your server(s) as well. For us... Silverlight/Flash/etc on servers is a no-go.

You will still need to install the Silverlight Client on your workstations. For
us, we pushed this through WSUS ...and now SCCM.

To get the Silverlight UI you need to install Silverlight components on your
client workstation. It will automatically prompt you to install if they
aren't there already. Everything else you need is already on the server.
You only need the client components on the server if you plan to browse from
the server console. At that point its just like any other workstation.

You can disable the automatic prompt for all your users if you want to.
I've already had one client where Silverlight isn't allowed on client
workstations request this. I wrote a blog on how to do it here:
