Is there a way to create a sort of sign-up sheet? I am thinking of a list where
a user can add their name without removing other names on that list.

Why not simply create a page with a link to the new item form? There's no need
for the user to actually go to the list.

What do you mean? A link to what? Sorry, I don't quite follow.

I think you may have misunderstood the question (not surprising since
Microsoft has appropriated the word "list").

You could simply create a custom list with a single "Name" column (or more
if you choose to go that way); then direct users to the New Item form for
that list to sign up.

If you want to keep them from altering other records in the list, go to
Advanced Settings for the list and click "Only their own" under "Item-level
permissions->Edit Access".

Okay! I get it now! This would indeed work, but doesn't it seem confusing for
the users to create a document in order to sign up? They would have to supply a
name for *something*.aspx or something like that.

No, not a document library; just a list. A library is a list where each
item (or record, or row, depending on your terminology) is based on an
uploaded file.

A list is just a collection of data entities, each of which is called a list
item. Try this: Go to your site, click on Lists or View All Site Content,
and then click the Create button near the top. You will be presented with a
number of choices; pick "Custom list" for the simplest flavor. Once you
give the list a name, click OK and then you can see how simple the interface
is.

I was looking in the wrong place. I saw "document list" and
"contact list" and other things - but "custom list" was in another place. This
is just what I wanted! God bless you, and thank you for taking the time for me!
