Short URL's in SharePoint

Asked By: Cedric    Date: Sep 09    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 13499

There has been quite a bit of concern and discussion here at the
University regarding the migration of our content over to SharePoint,
specifically regarding URL's.

Of course it is ideal not to change the old URL's when possible, but we
are slightly constrained by SharePoint's organization of
application/managedpath/sitecollection/site/Library/Default.aspx where
before the same page was likely located at home/Department/Default.aspx.

We would like to shorten the URLs as well as keep the URL's for migrated
content the same for users' bookmarks.

Here are two articles defending those ideas

http://www.w3.org/Provider/Style/URI -> Keep Url's the same

e/4578/ -> rewrite URL's for simplicity and search engines

It seems intuitive to me that using a Content Management System, long
URL's are an annoyance that we must accept for the power SharePoint
provides. Does anyone know of an article defending that position?

Otherwise, Is there a product, or does SharePoint itself provide URL
rewriting so that visitors don't have to bookmark a site with endless
GUIDs or form parameters?

The easiest way of doing this is to implement a custom HttpModule that does
the URL rewriting. This same idea is being used within the Community Kit for
SharePoint on the Enhanced Blog Edition. It is fairly simple to do and would
give you the ability to re-write ny URL you need.

I'd never come across this resource before. It is gold!
