SharePoint Timer Service Fails

Asked By: Ramsey    Date: Dec 16    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1759

I am running SP 2003 Portal With a web front end and a Database on a
separate server. Here recently alerts on the system are failing to send.
Upon some digging around I found that my SharePoint Timer Service has
crashed. When I try to manually start the service I receive a dialog box
that says:

"Could not start the SharePoint service on Local Computer. Error 1075:
The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion."

Looking at a development install of SharePoint (the same version by the
way) the timer service has no dependencies. I found an article that says
to add a registry setting and adding MSSSQL$SHAREPOINT as a string value
with a depend on service. That gave me no luck. The only other thing
that Google returned had to do with Windows XP and a Spooler service.

Any other ideas?
