We are setting up a basic test server so that we can get familiarwith the technology. We will be deploying SharePoint 4th qt 2005.I'll be setting it up on the following;Compaq Presario 900MHz AMD Athlon756MB Ramone 30GB harddriveone 55GB harddriveI plan on installing Windows Server 2003. Now here's the question(s);Do you recommend SharePoint Portal Server 2003 over WindowsSharePoint Services?Should/can I also install Microsoft SQL on the same machine fortesting?
SharePoint Portal Server 2003 is essentially an application that runs on topof Windows SharePoint Services. If you want to evaluate both then I wouldinstall Portal Server. That way, you can work with the extendedfunctionality of the portal product but you can create standard WindowsSharePoint Services sites, too.I generally install Microsoft SQL Server on the same test machine and Iactually do this in production environments as well for small installations.
This is not an either/or question. If you are setting up an intranet, I wouldrecommend SPS, if project-related or extranet sites, you will also probably wantto use WSS.I would not run SQL Server on the same box in production, but ok for test.
