Sharepoint simple search

We have just started using sharepoint and are trying to use it as a
knowledge network within the company. We upload documents into
different areas and sub areas under topics. The problem we are
facing is, these documents don't come up in the simple or advanced
search. How ever if I create a site and upload documents into that
site and search for the document it shoes up but only when I am in
that site an not from any other place in the portal.
Any pointers as to what could be going on?

Sounds like you do not have the SPS search  components setup correctly (or not
setup at all). SPS search is based on an idexer which must be run periodically
(or setup on a schedule in the SPS administration UI) to index new content. WSS
uses SQL Full Text indexing which if enabled runs automatically.

If you haven't already done so, consult the SPS administrators guide -
specifically the sections on configuring search services.

In management\content of the site  where you want to be able to view
the documents  in your search, you need to apply 'add content' to
allow you to search  other site. Here you can also add links to web
sites.

Is this regarding SPS 2001 or 2003?????
