Sharepoint setup

Asked By: Grayson    Date: Aug 08    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 603

I am brand new to sharepoint and set up a simple site
(http://companyweb). After I got everything the way I wanted it - I
want users to access it - but they are all getting the create, setting,
ect options. I want them to be able to contribute to what I have set
up - but not to change the main setup. I checked the permissions and
they look ok....is there an easy solution?

Are you using the default 'contribute' permission level for your
users? I believe that it grants the 'Create Subsites', 'Manage Web
Site', 'Add and Customize Pages' site permissions.

You can edit this default permission level (which is what we did and
which is why I'm no longer sure what the defaults were) OR you can
create a new permission level without these specific site permissions
and apply it to your users.

Can they actually carry out changing settings, or do they just see the options  to? SharePoint 2003 does not security trim the user interface, so your users  will see those options. But if they try to modify any settings, they should get prompted for a login.

And the other issue for users  new to SharePoint is that depending on
their level of access, they can tinker with some settings then they
get challenged when they go to save their changes. That can be very
frustrating for the users and support!
