SharePoint search relevance criteria

Does anybody knows that what are the parameters or criterias based on
which the SharePoint Portal returns the search results. I know that it
sorts the results in terms of relevance but how that is defined and can
we change the relevance is unknown to me.

Anyone having an idea of the relevance criteria, would be supercool.

Well it uses something called the Okapi Probabilistic Ranking algorithm.
This uses many criteria  for giving something a rank such as the number
of times the search  term appears, where it appears (ie subject or body),
the size of the item it appears in and the overall corpus size.

You can change  the weights associated with certain properties by
modifying the SQL query that executes the search. Check out the SDK for
details.
