Sharepoint Search using a dash "-"

Asked By: Theresa    Date: Mar 26    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 2380

I have documents in sharepoint that are numbered with a dash in them,
such as "EM-1234" and "EM-1235".

When I do a search for EM-1234, the dash character acts like a logical
AND so my results are anything with "EM" or "1234". I get a lot more
documents returned than what I was asking for.

Is there a searching syntax or a method to make the dash character act
like a regular character?

The search  indexer treats "-" as a word-breaker, meaning that the index doesn't
keep "EM-1234" as a single word. The only way to change this would be to remove
"-" from from the word breaker list, which might have unintended consequences.

I have poked around the net trying to find
some "how-to's" on how to remove characters from the word breaker
list, but I can't seem to find anything. Can you point in the right
direction?

appears I misspoke - you can edit the "noise words" list (list of words not
to index), but not the word breaker config itself. The word breaker is fixed
based on the language of the site or document - depends on the information
available at index time.
